Hi Guys. I was listening to one of the Vertebrats CDs. I saw Mark & Tim in the credits and thought of Captain Rat. Checked utube and there you were. Awesome! I first saw CR in Aug 81. I'd just come to UI for my last 2 yrs, from jr. college in Rockford. I was getting moved into my apt and heard great live music thru the window. I followed the sound a few blocks and there you were. An outside street dance at a frat or something. Those things were great. Do they still have them? Anyway, CR was my first of several great band discoveries in CU. 1981-83 was a great musical time there. You guys, The Brats, Elvis Bros, B-Lovers and more. I got a job in Tucson in summer 83 after graduation and got to go to L.A. for the Rose Bowl so I saw CR there too. I found your website and especially liked the song list. Great taste, Todd Baby, I like that you're doing The Happy Organ. I've always thought it would be good as a medley with The Trashmen's My Woody to see if anyone gets the crude college humor joke. Ha ha. It's so great to see you guys still going strong. Viva Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets! By the way, are there still Rivettes?

Just been listening to Gerry Maiers on WGN. they are discussing when and WHY Chicagofest changed to Taste of Chicago One emailer said we could blame Captian RATS tim for ending Chicagofest...when he was signing to a manquin head and then tossed it over his head into the lake, causing the coast guard to retrive it.According to this emailer that was the turning point when crowd control became a problem and the fest had to move to an area easier to control.Do you guys have any recollection of any of this ?

I grew up in Rossville,Illinois from 1950-1964. My family has been in Rossville since my grandpa worked there on the railroad. I lived at 210 E. Attica Street as did my mom when she was a young child. It was a great place to be. I have been to see both your shows there and have enjoyed the band and going home. I used to go to the street dances when Winnie and Yoeman was on the corner. Oh what memories you brought to my heart. I would like to ask you if maybe the dance floor could be behind the people who are there to sit and enjoy the show. Both times I have been there I have been only able to hear the music but not be able to see the band and the funny faces and hats. Do you think maybe next year it could be different. There was a lot of upset people who couldn't see!

Just a short thank you to the U of I Alumni Association for including us in the 2007/08 California Rose Bowl experience. All of us in the band agree that the NYEve Gala at Loew's Santa Monica Beach Hotel was perhaps the most fun gig ever. And then after only sleeping a few scant hours it was off to the Official UIAA TailGate Bash at the Rose Bowl which was fabulous....thanks for making us feel like real rock stars on the boffo stage with 4 huge video screens and pro-quality TV cameras capturing our every move...and even on nationwide ABC tv as well....let's do it again! Even better than the last Rose Bowl! Thanks UIAA for partnering with Captain Rat & The Blind Rivets on this great, once in a lifetime experience! Go Illini. And thanks to all our fans and fellow U of I alums who bought our newly released Fighting Illini In Pasadena CD. A magical whirlwind experience indeed for everyone. What a HOT show in Melvin!! WOW! It took 2 days to fully recover, but ready for more of The Captain! We'll have to try to organize a road trip to Monticello for this year's Celebration there. I told our friends you'd be taking a break in a couple songs, and.... 8 songs later you were still playing! Some fun never changes, and THAT WAS FUN! Wondering if you've got anymore 'official' Rat T's that I can sweat out to the oldies?!?!

Sorry Ratfans but we will not be performing at the Arcola Broomcorn Festival this year (2006); Apparently their entertainment committee decided to go with other forms of entertainmnet as a change of pace. Sorry...but not our doing. We'd highly suggest coming to the Monticello Celebration this September instead. It's become one of our favorite summer festival gigs and a guaranteed good time! And of course....don't think of missing the Ford County Fair in July....a "must attend" for anyone in need of some summertime CR&BR Therapy!

Hey Ratfans - 7/05 - We're back from Paradise Islands, Bahamas where we played July 4 at the famous Atlantis Resort and Casino for a Psychadelic 60's Beach Party. Also on the bill were our friends 1964/Beatles Reunion. People from all over the world and did they rock out. A great time. Sorry we couldn't keep with tradition and play in C-U this year....but an opportunity to play out of the country at such a fabulous resort (with a couple extra days of R&R thrown in) was too much to pass up. Should we return to Atlantis we extend a hearty invite to all of our fans to come on down (hurricanes permitting that is)and join in the spectacular fun. By the way, this August marks the 25th anniversary of Captain Rat & The Blind Rivets. We may do a little something extra to celebrate the first weekend in August at Fat City Saloon or our Hessel Park gig. Check out our full calendar as there's tons of great summer events all over the state.....and of course, bring your lawchairs. Todd Modern, Captain Rat & The Blind Rivets

Can you give me any background on the CUBS song on the record. I have not played it yet because I do not have a record player any more. Anyway, I am just looking for some information on it like : Why was it made? For who? Do you still play it? And anything else you can tell me about it. My son and I are Cubs fans and are curious about it. Thank you in advance for your time. Steve

Hey guys, I was just looking through e-bay, and I saw someone selling a shirt from Huey's in Urbana. That made me think of my days at the U of I ('80 - '84), and of course, that made me think of Capt. Rat & The Blind Rivets at Mabel's on Green Street. I see that alot of those places are no more, but it was great to see that CAPT. RAT STILL TRIUMPHS. We had some of the greatest times at your shows, Afternoon Madness, Cruisin' for Burgers, etc. Halloween '84 was especially good! I think we even dressed up as you guys that year. My memory of that night wasn't that good twenty years ago, much less now. Great to see the website, I'll keep checking in to see if you're going to play up here around Chicago, or anytime in Champaign. Thanks for the memories & hope to see you sometime.

Hey, I love to come and hear Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets perform, you guys do such a great job with getting the crowd involved. It's just so much fun! My nephews absolutely love to come and hear you sing. They also love all of the different kinds of hats that Mark puts on. What really makes their day is when you play Wipe Out. My oldest nephew Kane's favorite song is Wipe Out. Thanks for the good music! Keep up the good work!

I told the Ottawa IL riverfest committee about you. You come highly recommended by a friend of yours that used to do some work for you. I got a reply from the committee so I hope they are quick to contact you about next summer, 2004. The basic time frame for the annual festival is wednesday through the first sunday in August (always ends the first sunday in August). We get typically very large crowds. Ron

You guys realy do put on a great show. We have our own Fire Works here in my home town, but Champaign has the greatest!! Along w/you guys it's the best! Keep up the god work! I have been going every year except the time you did not play. I don't like to miss it. This year brought my friends and they loved you all & the Fire works. Thanks for allowing the occasional fan to tap into your mixing board to record your shows in Carbondale. I'm living in Arizona and haven't been able to see you since you played Sunset Concerts in the late 80's. I now have a tape of that show, and the June show, compliments of my friend with the mini-disc recorder! His recordings allow me to relive the magic of playing the "Gazebemost Gazebo that you ever done gadzooked in." Keep on sharing the magic! Thanks from a long-distance fan, formerly from C'dale.

Extremely accurate description, Mark. Rock on. and on.. Randy Headband (former member of Whopperlust, from Burger City and... co-founder with George, Tim, and Chris of the precursor to Ratsback in the fall of 1970 at Folk House, 404 S. Busey, Urbana. We did many of those same songs, had pie fights, smashed equipment, etc. for five years. Ask Tim about the Dallas gig, or the afterhours Carbondale/Decatur clubs, or backing strippers at Rantoul during the war...or the song he wrote for us to play at the Krannert Center..some sweet memories...the Byrds medley was great: "I think I"m going back..... A-2, Tim, A-2.) Just a friendly reminder, and here's an article/interview from CarbondaleRocks about this Thurday's upcoming sunset concert. Music -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- who: Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets what: rock 'n' roll oldies/Sunset Concert where: Turley Park Gazebo/Carbondale, IL when: Thursday, June 19, 7-9pm Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets by Roger Trexler Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets have been performing classics of the 1950s and 1960s for twenty-three years. The band, which consists of Buster B. Dordaun on drums and vocals, Todd Modern on keyboards, trumpet, and vocals, Timmy Ray on vocals and guitar, Mark B. Rubel on bass and vocals, and recent addition Bart Bartonia on saxophone, delivers a fun, energetic rock 'n' roll circus atmosphere. The band has played with the likes of Carl Wilson and Cheap Trick, and has played huge venues like the Rose Bowl and Wrigley Field. Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets, the second Sunset Concert act, will play Thursday, June 19 at Turley Park at 7 p.m. Nightlife caught up with Mark B. Rubel and asked him some important questions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First, what's up with the name "Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets"? That has a lengthy history. I've been trying for years to come up with a good excuse for the name. Take your pick: One: we lost a bet. Two: the band was started by our great-great-great grandfathers, and we inherited the name. Three: it's part of the federal witness-relocation program.... Four: we chose it because it's so easy to remember? In reality, the band descended from an earlier version that sprang from another band called Ratsback, which came from the mystical observation that rats was star [spelled] backwards (hey, it was the seventies). Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets was the fifties/sixties offshoot of that band. "The Blind Rivets" came from the bodywork that the former band was doing on the schoolbus that the band traveled in. But if you can come up with a better explanation, by all means! Describe some of the music you perform. It's mostly fifties and sixties sort of party music. You know, the Ventures, Elvis, the Beach Boys, Frankie Valli. You know, "96 Tears," "Louie, Louie".... that kind of stuff. It's not like a nostalgia group, where you see somebody kind of plodding along. It's all done in an energetic way. What I say is we're like a cross between the Beach Boys, the Ramones, and the Marx Brothers. It's really got a kind of garage-rock energy. And we play ninety-minute sets without stopping. It's like one song after another with no break, no pauses. We just start slamming them out. It's a lot of high-energy jumping around and funny hats, masks, and stupid jokes. We do a lot of interacting with the crowd. We all have wireless gear and, much of the time, the only person on stage is the drummer. Everybody else is out in the crowd interacting with them. We respond very well to the crowd. Medium-aged people sort of get into the rock of it and older people, like us, like that particular kind of music, which is great. It really is great music, but it's nice to have it be alive... you know what I mean?.... And not sort of just warmed-over. We really do it in a very "in-the-moment" kind of way. We also do a lot of a cappella stuff, because when we rock we're rocking and then, usually, each set we'll stop and do five- or six-song just totally a cappella. We do "Don't Be Cruel" a cappella.... that kind of stuff. It's a nice break, so it's not just rock, rock, rock. We do some slow stuff too. It's good dancing music. It's cool.... We've always been more than just about playing. You see a lot of bands that are good or not good or whatever, they just stand there and play, like in their minds their job is to deliver the music. They don't look like they're having any fun. I can't stand that. I can't stand to watch people work! [I]t's certainly not entertainment to watch somebody [else] work. So even though we're all professionals outside the band-- we've got an attorney in the band, an engineer, a college professor, a counselor, et cetera.... [w]e're very serious about having great fun. It's not a showband in the sense that some showbands come out and do a routine, they do the exact same schtick. We do a lot of improvisation and we really strive to have, basically, as much fun as we can with each other. The music is good and the band is solid and we can kind of go beyond that to what we really see as the important thing... making people happy. That's really sort of a value that people don't see much these days. Which is one of the reasons, I think, for the downturn of the music industry as a whole. You get some grim person standing up there in black clothing looking like they're having dentistry done and you're like, "Wow, what am I going to pay for this for?" We just have a total blast. We try to entertain ourselves and, hopefully, in the process other people find it entertaining. Do you do any original music? We don't. It's straightahead fifties and sixties rock. Mostly American stuff, but we also do Beatles and a lot of surf music. We do "Wipe Out" and "Tequila." We all play a couple of instruments, so we kind of switch around once in awhile. Everybody sings. A lot of harmonies. It's a wonderful thing. There's nothing better than music when it's wonderful. There's nothing worse than seeing somebody working a job. You've been together a long time. What's kept the band together so long? Part of what makes it so fun for us is that it's not full time. We all have these other jobs during the week, and we just really just can't wait to play. Two or three nights in a row we are able to put all our energy into it because we know we're not going to have to do it the next night, and the next night, and the next. By the end of the weekend, we're ready to go back and do our other things. We've been cycling it that way and that's why we've been able to stay together for twenty-three years. Plus, we just happened to find a chemistry of personalities. We're able to get together, stay together, and be friends and not get on each other's nerves too much. It's unusual for marriages to last this long, much less a four-way band relationship. It's been a very interesting and enriching experience to be together this long. Our keyboard player's daughter graduated from high school last month. When she was born, the band had already been going four years! To go through life together in that way is a very wonderful thing. You have an interesting stage show. Describe it. Well, you can barely see the drum kit because it's entirely covered with stuffed animals and just weird objects that we buy at junk stores and garage sales. I wear a succession of masks and hats and play bass with tennis rackets and rolling pins, paint rollers, and toilet plungers. We all wear hats. There's a lot of random lunacy that really just keeps us entertained. A lot of weird, unexpected stuff happens. The greatest thing we've instituted lately is an applause sign. It lights up at the end of songs. It's really funny because it works. You turn the thing on and everybody goes wild. I wish I'd thought of it years ago. It's unlike anything you've ever seen. It's kind of an extravaganza sort of celebration. I kind of look at it as the circus coming to town. We play a lot of small towns, too, and it's interesting to take people out of their element. That's kind of what music is supposed to do, uplift people and take them out of themselves. And if it makes them happy to get up and dance, we try to encourage them to.

I wanted to tell you all that you're a crazy and enjoyable bunch of people... What a terrific show you four guys put on at the Cowden Pioneer Days... It was so fantastic to see people laugh and dance and smile for a change.....and just cut loose "rat dancing" as I call it!!! Keep up the fantastic work... You all are just wild and wacky...and I if I may add....handsome too!!!!! :):):) I also know that you all get together and play in Mattoon sometimes at Gunner Buc's... maybe my friends and I will see you there again sometime in the near future... What a great end to a fantastic summer jam, even though it started raining afterwards there at the Pioneer Days just as you were all finished for the evening.. I say again.....GREAT JOB and you're all NUTZ...but everyone loves all of you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Champaign to see the fireworks and i was really dissapointed that you guys weren't there this year. I was just wondering why and if you were planning on being there next year. Also, do you plan on playing at the Danville Civic Center again soon because you guys are awesome.

You guys still rock! My fondest memories of the U of I were spending late nights at Mabels with Captain Rat. I headed up to Shelbyville for the DQ blowout and was not disappointed.
